Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Economics Postgraduate Support Endowment Fund Description

UQ’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Economics Postgraduate Support Endowment is a needs-based fund that supports eligible Indigenous postgraduate students by providing two scholarships each year in perpetuity. Successful students will receive $4000 in their first year of study and $2000 in their second year for the purposes of purchasing technology and/or travel back to Country during the course of their one or two-year program. Help us raise $140,000 to increase the participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates within the School of Economics.

Why donate to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Economics Postgraduate Support Endowment

Your donation to the UQ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Economics Postgraduate Support Endowment can create measurable and enduring social change by providing new higher education opportunities for Indigenous students.

Economics is indelibly linked to how we, as a domestic and as a global community, function and thrive. Those who study Economics go on to share their insights and learnings across countless sectors, including government, finance, health, natural resources, and education. It is critical Indigenous knowledge is shared in these areas to augment understanding and provide a unique perspective on the challenges that we face.

Your donation this Giving Day will help to increase the representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in higher education, a priority identified in the UQ Reconciliation Action Plan. Your support will help the development of a generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander professional economists.

“By growing the number of Indigenous students who have access to a UQ education, we are helping to create and enable a new generation of ChangeMakers to contribute to the nation’s knowledge economy, policy and leadership and political decision making, who can positively influence research in Indigenous communities and drive legacy outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples”.

Why are donations necessary?

The fund enables students to purchase technology and travel back to country during the course of the up to two-year program. It assists Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in achieving their academic goals by helping to alleviate the financial burden that can impact success in completing their studies at UQ. A university education can be a powerful game-changer for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with a positive impact extending to whole families, communities – and Australia as a whole. A UQ degree opens up new professional opportunities, but also higher degree research pathways to create the next generation of scholars, policy experts and community leaders. The fund helps to increase the representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in higher education, a priority identified in the UQ Reconciliation Action Plan. It will help the development of a generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander professional economists.
